From May 23 through 26, 2017, finalists of the fifth edition of PULASKI'S TWO FACES. History and maritime competition took part in a trip to the Polish Tri-City of Gdansk, Gdynia, and Sopot on the Baltic Sea, where they competed in the Grand Finale in the Navy Port in Gdynia aboard the ORP "Gen. K. Pulaski.”
Twenty secondary school students from the entire Mazovian Province were eligible to take part in the finale, and eighteen of them went on to compete in Gdynia. The knowledgeable youth was accompanied by jurors — the Museum staff and Grojec District Deputy Governor Dariusz Piatkowski, who represented district authorities managing the Museum. Commander of ORP "Gen. K. Pulaski” Lt. cmd Pawel Werner greeted the gathered on site.
On the first day, the party went to Gdynia to sight see the beautiful city center with its famous Kosciuszko Square and enjoy a walk on the nearby beach. The following day was equally, if not more important for the students – they were expected to put their physical skills to the test aboard the vessel since early morning. As prospective soldiers, they threw lifebuoys, put on survival suits as quickly as possible, tied square knots, and much more. The results were to be taken into consideration during the third stage of the competition, and the finalists lived up to the expectations.
The vessel itself made an enormous impression on the contestants, who were able to tour it, ask questions, and talk to crew members. Once the physical skills had been tested, Commander Lt. cmd Pawel Werner invited the gathered for lunch in the officer's mess. In the afternoon, students visited two Gdynia-based museums: The Navy Museum (Muzeum Marynarki Wojennej) and the City of Gdynia Museum (Muzeum Miasta Gdyni) with its modern exhibition entitled "Gdynia – work of art – in progress" (Gdynia – dzielo otwarte). Finally, the contestants spent the evening in Sopot, walking up and down the pier and beach.
On day three, students visited the Polish Naval Academy in Gdynia, where they were made familiar with its structure, possible courses, and two simulators, designed to practice steering and shooting (Snieznik model). The next point on the agenda came as a nice surprise to all – the youth was shown to one of the most elite training centers in Poland – the Cmd. Stanislaw Mielczarek Polish Naval Diving Training Center (Osrodek Szkolenia Nurkow i Pletwonurkow Wojska Polskiego im. Komandora Stanislawa Mielczarka), where they witnessed a presentation by professional soldiers affiliated with the center. Darkness, storm, wind, a chopper falling into the sea, and a salvage mission resembled more an action film than reality, which the divers training at the center have to face every day.
The time for surprises was however nowhere near being over. After the visit to the center, students went aboard the ORP "Orzel" (eagle) submarine. What's more, the organizers were able to arrange a visit to one of the newest and most hype museums in Poland, which is the Second World War Museum in Gdansk. The three-hour tour went by quickly, and the museum left the patrons with unforgettable memories. The sheer size of the museum combined with modern technologies applied throughout the building and the emotional and difficult story behind the Second World War and its impact on people's lives simply took the breath away. To reflect on the experiences gained that they, the party went for an evening walk down Gdansk Old Town.
The last and final day of the trip was dominated by emotions surrounding the award ceremony aboard ORP "Gen. K. Pulaski.” The glamorous event, which included Under-Secretary of State Prof. Wojciech Falkowski with the Ministry of National Defense, who had also assumed Honorary Patronage over the competition, ORP "Gen. K. Pulaski”crew members with Commander Lt. cmd Pawel Werner, and 3rd Ship Flotilla Commander cdre adm Krzysztof Jaworski, the Deputy Minister of National Defense presented the finalists with prizes and commemorative diplomas. Deputy Governor Dariusz Piatkowski awarded further prizes on behalf of Grojec district authorities.
Once the points from all three stages of the competition had been added, the jury named Krystian Czubak from Sochaczew the winner, with his point count of 401. Natalia Koscianek from Warka came second with 320 points. Both Mr. Czubak and Mrs. Koscianek received the opportunity to practice aboard a Polish navy ship sailing across the Baltic Sea from August 7 through 11, 2017. We would like to congratulate both Krystian and Natalia as well as all prizewinners. This year's fifth edition of the competition concluded with commemorative photos aboard ORP "Gen. K. Pulaski.”
We wish to thank ORP "Gen. K. Pulaski” Commander and Crew for their assistance. We also thank Grojec district authorities, our partners, and sponsors for their support. Finally, we would like to thank all secondary school students who participated in the competition as well as their teachers and mentors from the entire Mazovian province.
